My class was taught in St. Margaret Mary Catholic school (Omaha NE) that every time an individual entered a Catholic church on All Souls' Day one soul would be released from purgatory. The only requirement was to enter a Catholic church - nothing more. The "miracle" wasn't limited to one entry per day. Even at that time (7th or 8th grade) it reminded me of the prayer wheel that some Buddhists used.
