October is a month for the arts in Williamsburg. Today’s paper featured two articles about upcoming arts activities in the town, but I’m only going to talk about one of them — An Occasion for the Arts. Founded in 1969, this event has become the area’s premier art and music festival. It’s always held on the first weekend in October each year, and it draws artists from around the country. This year, it has drawn more than 100 artists. I can’t say we have attended this event every year, but we attend it regularly. Although we’ll be out of town on Saturday, I expect we’ll drop by during the day on Sunday.
I have to tell you – the first time we attended this event after we moved here 25 years ago, I was expecting the normal craft fair items. You know, kitschy “kiss the cook” aprons and things made with corncobs. Well, let me tell you – the art presented during this festival is first-rate. Buying something from the booths along the street will require a significant investment, but you’ll know you’re getting something both excellent and unusual.
This year, something new has been added: a Friday night fundraiser ahead of the weekend-long event. Called “An Evening for the Arts,” this outdoor event will take place in a parking lot on Merchant Square. It will give patrons an opportunity to get a sneak peek at the artwork, mingle with the artists, enjoy food and beverages from local restaurants, and listen to some live music. The event will raise funds to support an Artist in Residence program for area schools, which will bring a practicing artisan into a school for a period of time to work on a project that will become a public art installation.
Just another reason to love my town.
I have enjoyed this event in the past and would be there this time, too, if I could…..the Friday evening opportunity is a great addition. I hope it goes smoothly for everyone!
I agree! I love this event and will be there on Saturday with my daughter.
