Another Day in the 'Burg
The headlines on the front page of today’s Virginia Gazette are truly local – but they have some national implications that make them important, or at least interesting.
For foodies, the fact that Ileana D’Silva, a 23-year-old local chef ,will appear on Gordon Ramsay’s “Hell’s Kitchen” this week is enticing. She is from nearby Gloucester County and has been working at the local Casa Pearl restaurant since 2018. I don’t know this restaurant, but we may decide to make a visit to experience the skills of this up-and-coming chef.
The story below the fold is truly an “inside baseball” story about decision-making at our local university, The College of William & Mary. At a recent meeting of the college Board of Visitors (its governing body), the college announced that it is exploring the possibility of establishing a new academic unit in computing and data science. However, the focus of the article is even more “inside.” Apparently, the college faculty was not consulted about this plan before it was announced publicly, and they are a little miffed.
The third story – about a strong storm that came through the region on Sunday afternoon – resonates because of the news about Hurricane Ian that is pummeling Florida today.
According to the story, more than 2,500 Williamsburg-area residents lost power due to the storm. In addition, a tree fell and hit a cable on the Skyride at Busch Gardens – this is the overhead ride that transports visitors across the park at tree level. Another tree downed a power line in a city park and caused a brush fire.
Another story – this one on page 7 – focuses on a local issue that would never be covered by a state-wide or national newspaper.
This article is specifically focused on efforts to revitalize an indigenous language spoken by the Mattaponi, a native tribe with a reservation in nearby New Kent County. However, in the course of the article, the author provides some background information about the Mattaponi, both historically and currently. Here’s more information about the Mattaponi. https://www.mattaponination.com/
