I had a friend in my French 4 class who knew German, so we would converse in Grenlish, a combination of German, English, and French. We would use words from whatever language first came to mind as we spoke. He called me "ma petite chou". Memories...
I really enjoyed reading this essay, Karen. I can relate to a lot of it. For example, I tried out for cheerleading, too, and never made it. It was the cool thing to do!! Right?? However, I simply was not coordinated enough to handle the pompoms and my feet and arms at the same time! Never mind following the cheer and being in step with the others. 😂
Sort of the story of my life but an important life lesson to learn as early as possible! 🤩
Such fun. I thoroughly enjoyed being your date (even though I didn't supply a corsage). I think we really could have been good friends at Annandale, and I'm sorry I missed that opportunity. Maybe that's what made the reunion all the sweeter! Whatever. Keep writing, and I'll keep reading your entertaining and educational articles.
What a lovely reminiscence! And, how similar and different our experiences were. Your cultural references are mine, but your social life was so different - well, except for slipping out with a friend late at night to wander the neighborhood!
Am glad you went back after 60 years. I only lived one year after college back in my hometown (in Tennessee) and have never been back to a reunion. Two of my three "best" friends are dead and the third has lived in Florida for 40+ years - take from that what you will! I just don't seem to have ties to those years, but I'm also sure that I have missed out on knowing those old friends as adults. I'll live vicariously thru your memories.
I also took four years of French and three years of German in high school. Weird, huh?
C'est vrai. Es ist wahr.

That was fun…I needed some fun!

I have never looked back and I have no regrets!!
